Abstract

In modern library buildings the total flexibility cannot be accomplished. Librarians should be more open-minded about accepting converted fixed-function buildings. They can make satisfactory libraries both aesthetically and functionally. Other factors for converted buildings include central location, cost of conversion less than new buildings, shorter construction times. Flexibile, open plan library, however, is not perfect and brings about its own constrains and problems. Some case studies of old English library buildings are discussed.
